NATIONAL NEWS

ACA's Investigation of ASHN Heats Up - According to an article by Julie Lenhardt, Associate Director, Insurance Advocacy which appeared in the June/July 2012 issue of ACA's on-line newsletter In Touch,

"The ACA has received information from not only providers and their staff, but also patients demonstrating their mounting concerns. We also have received information that other parties such as employers and regulators have begun to take notice of the egregiousness of ASHN's practices. In fact, ASHN ranks as one of the most frequently identified companies causing concerns for doctors of chiropractic and their patients in the emails and phone calls ACA has received recently."

More information on ACA's investigation of ASHN and efforts with other networks can be found on ACA's Chiropractic Network Action Center at www.acatoday.org/CNAC

Anthem BCBS of California Reverses Policy - The ACA and the California Chiropractic Association (CCA) worked together to get an Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield policy that unfairly forced doctors of chiropractic to participate in its automobile medical coverage network reversed! Anthem decided to reverse its policy, and effectively allow DCs to opt out of the Automobile Medical Coverage Network Access Plan and maintaining their other Anthem contracts. Anthem has notified ASHN of its decision, and payer summaries will be updated during the next revision. Providers need to notify Anthem if they wish to opt out of the Automobile Medical Coverage Network Access Plan.

2013 ICD-10 CM Codes & Mapping Files are Available - The 2013 ICD-10-CM codes and mapping files are now posted on the HYPERLINK "" 2013 ICD-10-CM and GEMs Web page. These files contain information on the new diagnosis coding system, ICD-10-CM, that is being developed as a replacement for ICD-9-CM, Volumes 1 and 2.

As a reminder, CMS recently posted the 2013 ICD-10-PCS files to the 2013 ICD-10-PCS and GEMs Web page. CMS has also posted the ICD-10 Medicare Code Editor v 29 (MCE v29 to be used with v29 Definitions Manual) on the ICD-10 MS-DRG Conversion Project Web page along with additional files for the the ICD-10 MS-DRG conversion project.

ICD-10 Will become mandatory on October 1, 2014. HHS has announced the final rule that delays the ICD-10 compliance date from October 1, 2013 to October 1, 2014. CMS has a website that will help you find resources to help, Providers, Payers, and Vendors with the U.S. health care industry's transition to ICD-10 on October 1, 2014. As of January 1, 2012, all electronic transactions must use Version 5010 standards, which accommodate ICD-10 codes. LEARN MORE

New Electronic Payment Rules May Save Billions The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced on Wednesday the release of a new rule that is estimated to save approximately $2.7 to $9 billion--over the next 10 years--in administrative costs for physician practices, hospitals, and health plans. As stated in the rule, "Many factors contribute to the high cost of health care in the United States. Administrative costs have a substantial impact on the growth of spending, and this is an area of cost that can likely be reduced." The regulation adopts operating rules for Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) and Electronic Remittance Advice (ERA). By automating these tasks, it is believed that time and labor spent collecting and reconciling payments in physician offices and hospitals will be decreased. The compliance date for operating rules for the health care electronic funds transfers and remittance advice transaction is Jan. 1, 2014. LEARN MORE
